Originating with the efforts of civic organizations, in the 1970s, initial bike planning in the village can be traced back to the creation of ‘tour loops’ throughout the village.

However, it was not until 2000, when the availability of federal funding, prompted by transportation acts, enabled Downers Grove to implement its first comprehensive Bikeway Plan. As stated in the historical analysis provided in the 2011 Plan:

“The Bikeway Plan sought to enhance these efforts by examining existing conditions, developing a bicycle network philosophy, encouraging broad public participation, and outlining implementation strategies. The goals were to connect major destinations throughout the Village and to provide a network that was accessible to all levels of riders. Special attention was paid to connecting to existing and adjacent bicycle path networks. Additionally, the plan addressed wayfinding signage and bicycle parking. At the time of the Bikeway Plan, Metra did not allow bicycles on trains (a policy that has now been reversed).” Source

Thereafter, community planning continued to improve. However, the village continues to recognize the multitude of areas that can be improved upon by addressing exiting gaps. As such, village efforts remain focused on the full implementation of a Master Plan in Downers Grove that will preserve village quality, but also ensure the efficiency and accessibility of alternate transportation modes; the prevention of accident and injury to bicyclists and pedestrians; and the promotion of safety and awareness of risk factors associated with vulnerable road users.
