The personal injury and accident lawyers of Zneimer & Zneimer, P.C. provide exemplary legal services to the residents of Skokie, and other neighboring cities in Illinois. Sharing a border with the city of Chicago, Skokie is located within Cook County, with an approximate population of 63,000 residents. Skokie, Illinois has become to be known as ‘The World’s Largest Village.’ Our personal injury accident attorneys represent those who have been injured or killed as the result of another’s negligence in a car accident.
Residents of Skokie, like other Illinois residents, are required to carry a particular level of auto insurance coverage for the vehicles. Current Illinois law requires minimum coverage in the amount of $25,000 in injury or death benefit coverage, with a total coverage of $50,000 per accident. Illinois also requires property damage coverage in the amount of $20,000. Illinois does not require coverage for uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. Underinsured motorist coverage is special optional coverage that can be included in your auto policy, which can provide compensation for injuries exceeding the policy limits held by the tortfeasor. Uninsured motorist coverage provides coverage for bodily injury sustained by a negligent motorist, who, while operating their vehicle, or entrusting it to another, fails to carry auto insurance.
The mandatory vehicle insurance law is enforced in two ways: 1) if you are stopped for a traffic violation or involved in an accident, you may be convicted of operating an uninsured vehicle and that conviction would be submitted to the Secretary of State for a license plate suspension and a three-month driver’s license suspension; or 2) your license plate registration may be randomly selected and you would receive an insurance verification form from the Secretary of State where your liability coverage would be verified with your insurance company. Your license plates would be suspended if you did not have insurance on the verification date specified on the form or if you do not return the form. You may not drive your vehicle while your license plates are suspended. Make sure you have auto insurance that at least meets the minimum mandatory requirements.
A common misconception amongst Skokie residents, like other residents in Illinois, regarding auto policies, is that it is substantially less expensive to carry the state minimums in an auto policy. However, these increases typically relate to comprehensive and collision coverage. Unbeknownst to many consumers, insurance carriers may offer discounts to its customers that choose policy limits beyond state minimums. Consequently, motorists are often unaware that by increasing policy limits, this may actually result in a reduction in the policy quote or may cause only a nominal increase. Car accidents and the resulting injuries come in a variety of forms, and our accident and injury attorneys always advise our clients that, when feasible, it is preferred to carry insurance coverage exceeding Illinois’ minimum requirements. If you get into a car accident, our Skokie accident lawyers will evaluate all applicable policies and determine your legal rights and remedies.
